What is a “WebMaster”?

Have you ever heard the term “webmaster“? I’ve been on the Internet for what feels like decades. I truly wish I had taken the time in the beginning to learn more about the Internet and computers when it first took off.

Back in the beginning, those pioneers developed a way for us all to stay in contact with family and friends. These places of contact were called Bulletin Boards (BBS). They were filled with forums where users could discuss the topic of the day. They also included a way to chat privately via the computer as well as a variety of DOS-based games.

I ran one of these BBBs for about 5 years. I had so much fun and to be perfectly honest, I developed some decent typing speed which of course helped me IRL (in real life). Now I run Barb’s Best Bounty and am so happy with the way things are working out for me.

A webmaster was anyone who had a web page or web service that they controlled. They were responsible for every aspect of a site from creation to maintenance. You learned a lot about running multiple computers and dial-up connections via a modem. For each connection you needed a modem. Of course now, all is multiple connections and the technology has changed so much.

In some ways it’s easier. Most connections are automatic as long as you are connected to your ISP (Internet Service Provider). In others, more difficult. Example: Installation of Security on your server. Installation of Various software packages needed to run a website.

So here are some tips for you, the WebMaster (aka  Search Engine Optimizer (SEO), online marketer, blogger, web developer, or site owner,).

  • Research your keywords (unless given to us by Rory or our MSIs)
  • Follow Yoast suggestions to get your pages green over green
  • Use the following template when creating new pages. Make sure you have at least 3 topics but no more than 5. If you have more than 5 create a new page and follow the same template.
    • Introduction
      • Topic 1
      • Topic 2
      • Topic 3
    • Conclusion
  • Make sure your content is engaging. If you wouldn’t read it why would someone else?

The most important tip of all is to have fun while you are working on your site. The adage, “Time flies when you are having fun.” is so true for us. If you are not having fun, then try to figure out why you aren’t having any.
