Yes there is a National Pear Day holiday! Pears come from a long lineage. They originated in southeastern Europe and were a favorite food of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The ancient Greek author Homer described them as “gifts from the gods” likely due to their sweet, juicy flavor. The early Romans developed 50 varieties of pear and planted them across Europe.
Here are some recipes for you to enjoy!
For me the very best recipe for enjoying a pear is to eat it. You’ll want to wash and dry the fruit in preparation for eating. After washing the pear, cut it in half and with a small melon baller scoop out the stem and seeds. Then slice each half into slices. And enjoy!
Pear Crisp – Easy to make and oh so delicious. You can elevate this dessert to the next level by serving with a scoop of homemade ice cream and drizzle a little caramel over the entire serving! Enjoy!
Maple-Pear Tarte Tatin – This is a very impressive dessert. You should consider it when you’ve been invited to a small gathering/potluck.
Pork Crown Roast with Pears – While mostly see on Christmas tables, this recipe can be used to make any occasion just that much more special. Add a glass of wine from our Wine of the Month Club and the accolades are unending!
A story for the children to celebrate National Pear Day
Here is a quick video for the kids in your life. It’s a 5 minute video from YouTube. It is of a woman who is reading the book out loud and following along with the book where the child can see the words being read. This video is “The Magic Pear Tree” by Rosie Dickens. A quaint tale about a beggar who teaches a greedy merchant about sharing.
