Christmas Traditions 2022. Some are handed down for decades. Growing up, it started with a family dinner in the dining room on Christmas eve. Dinner was a delicious roll that was easy to make. After dinner, we’d all get to open 2 presents. The first was always a new pair of PJs. The second was a small toy like a doll, or a car. After playing for a bit, we all were herded upstairs (Remember, I am the oldest of 12) to our beds. Of course it took forever to fall asleep. The older 3 would sneak down part of the stairs to see what Mom and Dad were doing, to see if it was safe to go peek at the treasures packaged under the tree.
Christmas Morning
Christmas morning we had to wait until Mom and Dad were awake. We’d race downstairs to grab our stockings. We could play with any of the toys in the stockings, but forbidden to touch the gifts under the tree. Mom would hand out each gift, and we watched our siblings open their gifts and moved to the next child until everyone had opened a gift. We all ooohhh’d and ahhhh’d appropriately. Christmas Dinner was a smorgasbord in our eyes. Glazed Ham, Mashed Potatoes and Brown Gravy, veggies galore and the best part of all where all the pies! The major trick is to prepare as much as you can on Christmas Eve. This limits the time you are in the kitchen and can be out with the family enjoying the present opening!
Christmas Pannycakes – Create panycakes (pancakes) that will thrill even the most fussiest of eaters on Christmas Morning. You can freeform the shapes of snowmen, angels, etc if you are talented. If you are talentless like I am, you’ll want a mold to help out on the festivities on Christmas morning.
Ham and Egg Squares – My late husband told me he had created this recipe. But through the years, he talked about this coming from his mother. This recipe has an overnight portion to the dish that actually makes it as good as it is.
Hamburger Rollup – Easily made with simple ingredients. Most of which you’ll already have in your cupboard or pantry. This has been our Christmas Eve tradition for at least 2 decades now.
