On Labor Day, the first Monday in September, American workers celebrate their social and economic achievements. The holiday honors contributions of workers to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Labor activists in the late nineteenth century helped to create the holiday.
For many Americans, Labor Day celebrations include parades, picnics, and parties, reminiscent of the holiday’s first proposal. Trade and labor organizations from the community were a prominent part of the parade, demonstrating their strength and cooperative spirit. As a result, the workers and their families were then entertained and re-energized through a festival. As a result, this became the tradition to celebrate Labor Day throughout history.
Celebrations
One way to celebrate Labor Day is the inclusion of a parade. This parades, advertised in local paper and channel became the main event. Depending on the event, you may wish to get your seats along the parade route the night before. Many families include this overnight camping as a new tradition. For those on the younger side thermoses filled with hot chocolate to warm the body and the insides. For the adults, hot Alpines, comprised of hot chocolate and a shot of peppermint schnapps.
Soon after the ending of the parades and awards we hurried off to our favorite park, the town’s band shell or even back to our own backyards. These festivities allow for celebrating the workers who had worked so diligently to create and work the businesses now in existence.
Games and Food
In my research, I found that the games played on this holiday closely resemble those of the 4th of July. If attending a community event, you’ll see three-legged races, potato sack races and others. Local businesses award small prizes and blue ribbons to the winners
Picnic baskets filled with fried chicken, bowls heaping with potato salad, corn on the cob, huge watermelon slices, and jugs of lemonade show off the culinary skills of the creator. A cake walk could become a part of a community’s traditions. The bakers in the area donate a cake and they could be actioned off. The proceeds to a local charity such as the Food Bank, Red Cross, or other charity that reflects the purpose of the holiday.
